I probably could talk forever about the miracle of adoption. There are so many ways to build a family. Some have travelled tirelessly overseas to meet the child God has chosen for them. For others, a matched US adoption has led them anywhere ranging from ten miles to a thousand. For others, a baby, a child or teen from foster care have been brought to their home needing a family to love them unconditionally.
This past mother’s day, a few of my friends posted this quote on their Facebook walls:
“Children born to another woman call me ‘Mom.”
The magnitude of that tragedy and the depth of that privilege are not lost on me.”
Here is the thing. There is no doubt a certain sadness in adoption. For most, it means unspeakable courage, especially for a woman who trusts in another to raise the child she bore. I never want to forget the privilege I have in getting to be on the side of celebration.
Today I celebrate this family. Kathryn, Kevin and Joanna. I am amazed by their focus together as they persevere to help Joanna reach new milestones every day. No surprise- Joanna has an amazing role model who I know demonstrates determination. Her mom, Kathryn, works as a teacher, while attending graduate school, while also running a photography business. Pretty amazing.
These photos represent the celebration of family. The closeness, the caring and the miracle.
